The dateline on this morning's post is Augusta rather than Gardiner, because I'm posting from the Maine State Library. Just down the hill, the fine technicians at O'Connor Volkswagen are replacing the brake light switch in my car; its demise is the reason my car won't go.
As repairs go, it's pretty minor. When I couldn't shift the car out of park this morning, I had visions of transmission replacements, weeks without the car, etc., etc... on top of whatever needs to be done to make my laptop functional again. As Roseanne Roseannadanna used to say, it's always something.
Got home last night around midnight, picked up Dizzy this morning, and have spent the rest of the day dealing with the car. I'll cut this post short except to say Happy Birthday and Many Happy Returns to Dad, who does not want me to say anything about which birthday this is.

Hey, I had the same thing happen to me today. Apparently this is fairly common to the new VW beetles. I got mine done for free as a recall. Just ask your dealer if your year qualifys for the recall.
Thank you so much for this information! I have had this problem multiple times where my car will not shift out of park, and I had it fixed, but I was never told there was a recall until I asked. (After seeing this on the internet) This has been a lot of help. Also... after speaking with the service department at my local dealership, I was instructed on how to get it into drive so that I could drive it to the dealership. First, push your break pedal all the way down, and then put your key into the ignition and turn it only 1/4 of an inch. After this, you should be able to shift into neutral. Then, start the car and move it into drive. Hope this helps!
