I don't know how to reduce the size of photo files (jpgs, etc.).

Nothing witty today, just an annoying gap in my knowledge base. I have some large images that need to be posted to a client's website, and I don't know how to make these files small enough to email. If anyone has suggestions, please get in touch -- and no, converting these files to PDFs doesn't work; if anything, it seems to make the files larger.

Every year I try to do something completely new -- something that forces me to say, "I don't know how to do this" -- and in 2009, I think I'll take a course on something computer-related. Adobe, maybe, or DreamWeaver. It annoys me not to know how to do stuff I need to do.

I'm irritable in general this morning, because the sky and the ground are the same white-gray color, we are under a winter storm warning that's scheduled to last until tomorrow afternoon, and I just realized that I forgot to buy milk yesterday.

Grumble about something of your own in the comments section.

What are you using as a viewer? Some viewer let you reduce the pixel density. It reduces the pic quality.

I don't know if a "Zipfile" program will reduce the size of 1 item. We have Winzip but I don't know what there is for Macs.

Not helpful but it may set off a synapse later on

I forgot to grumble earlier

This sinus cold has made it so I don't have the senses of taste or smell. not at all.

There are some inconviences, like only being to experience the texture of food. Taste and smell are so important to enjoying food and to not have them is a loss. It does mean I can buy the cheapest stuff in the store as I can't taste it anyway.

It does mean that I can finish off all those half used bags of coffee beans in the fridge as I can't taste how bad or gone by the coffee is, but I do get the caffiene.

If you have a graphics program like Photoshop, PaintShop Pro, or GIMP (or even some photo software that comes with a camera), reducing the image size will also make the file smaller. This is particularly handy when you know the image is going to be too large to render on screen anyway.

Thank you...I think will grumble about something. I left my wallet at home and I'll have to borrow money to pay for parking. Grrr! Hope I don't get pulled over driving home - my license is in my wallet.

Hey there,
I use a free instal called Irfanview. It's a FREEWARE image viewer/converter
for Windows 9x/ME/NT/2000/XP/2003/Vista.

I've used it sporadically for a couple of years now, it's fast and small, and needs extremely low system resources requirements, but don't take my 'annonymous' word for it, go research it.

It's simple to use for beginners and converts file size and a heap of other stuff.

Alternatively join a free image hosting service like Photobucket, there are others too. They all offer photo editing options which include changing the file size.

Good luck, great blog btw.

I've got Photoshop for stuff like that. Not sure how to do it otherwise, and I've got a Mac which might be different than Windows...

My roommate started off with what everyone thought was the side effects of a concussion, but when she turned out to have a 102 degree fever yesterday they decided she has some sort of viral infection.

I better not get sick...

And I'm tired of listening to her snort and cough and whatever that other noise is she's making in there.

So what new thing did you learn in 2008?

I need to suck it up and buy a basic Photoshop package ... thanks for the freeware suggestion, but I work on a Mac so doubt I could use it.

Anna, I had no idea how to stage manage an Equity production. I bought a textbook that taught me how.

Get GIMP. Read here:

I spend enough time laughing at "photoshops" that I should know what I'm talking about.

Did your Mac come with iphoto? You can resize photos when you export them to email, etc, if you do, but it's a pain in the butt. I don't know from pixels, myself!

I spent half an hour tinkering in iPhoto yesterday afternoon, before throwing up my hands in despair.

I know, a four-year-old child could make sense of it. Get me a four-year-old child...

Try Paint.net a free photoshop clone. Two ways there is to adjust the size (shrinking it will shrink the file size) or adjusting the quality when you go to save it as a jpeg.
Good luck.

Hello, My name is Greg and I was just sitting around this evening thinking about things, and strangely a play came to my mind that I was in back when I was in the 9th grade. It was called The Trysting Place. when I went to the web, I saw your blog and it kind of reminded me of me. Memories of being in the play but not much about the play itself. I remember playing one of the leads, a young man who fell for an older woman as I recall. Anyway, I can't seem to find a copy of it and if you could help, it would be greatly appreciated. Any info can be sent to gregmoeller2005@yahoo.com
Thanks, Greg
