I don't know of any great mysteries or thrillers set in Australia.

My friend Sue, world traveler, just asked for recommendations for mysteries and thrillers set in Australia -- and I couldn't come up with one.

Of course I thought of Colleen McCullough's THE THORN BIRDS, and Thomas Keneally's WOMAN OF THE INNER SEA is gripping, but neither of those is exactly a thriller, and anyway I assume that Sue has read them.

Michael Robotham is an Australian author writing good mysteries, but they're set in London...

Anyone have any suggestions? I feel embarrassed that I can't come up with anything, and don't know why Australian authors aren't more widely distributed, promoted and read in the United States.

Thanks very much. I appreciate any help that comes my way.

Can anyone recommend books set in Dubai (or elsewhere in the Emirates)? ... set in the Caribbean? ...set on the Isle of Wight specifically? ...set in Tokyo (other than Barry Eisler's books, which I've already read)? ...set in Alaska?

Look forward to some good reading.

Alaska is easy: anything by Dana Stabenow or Sue Henry. Also, THE YIDDISH POLICEMEN'S UNION by Michael Chabon, though that is written in an alternate reality, not real Alaska.

Set in Australia? Try Peter Temple. THE BROKEN SHORE is pretty damn fantastic. Also Adrian Hyland's DIAMOND DOVE (or MOONLIGHT DOWNS, the US title).

Australia mysteries --
Vintage:
Inspector Napoleon Bonaparte Mysteries by Arthur William Upfield
These are hard to find as they are out of print in the U.S. Mystery Bookstore use to have several in stock.

There is also a hardboiled detective series that was pretty good.... can't think of the author's name.. Ken Corris, Ken Corci.. something like that.
Little help?

There's the Inspector Detective Napoleon Bonaparte series by Arthur Upfield. "Bony" is an Aboriginal half cast detective and I think there are quite a few books in the series. I haven't read them but I think they are supposed to be very good.

'Shantaram" by Gregory David Roberts, while not a mystery, is a big juicy book with plenty of thrills. Also check out anything by Tim Winton. "The Riders" has a mystery at it's heart and "Dirt Music" is a great read.

Thanks, everybody -- and Kevin, I didn't even realize that "Picnic at Hanging Rock" was a book first!
