Are you really taking the long weekend off?

Who's asking: One of my clients

No. No, I'm not. I tried, and failed. I am incapable of taking meaningful time off unless I physically remove myself from all the tools of my work: no computer, no telephone, no books.

On Saturday I managed to spend a few hours digging a garden. It's a small garden, but with luck it will produce tomatoes and peppers and green leaf lettuce, and something "yellow" that I thought was peppers but may be beans. (The tag on the seedling said "yellow." I assumed the plants were peppers, so didn't ask; now I look at my Organic Gardening book and think they're probably beans. I like beans.)

The fact that I'm working today speaks to some fundamental issues in my life at the moment, things that will require hard decisions and possibly some big changes -- but from those issues, at least, I'm taking a holiday.

Just so you know you're not alone in being in the home office today, I'm also working. Did Saturday and, probably not enough, Sunday, too.

As I tell people, the great thing about freelancing is that you get a lot of free time. The bad thing is you aren't really in control of when that free time comes. And if you have work, you might as well be working. Office hours are when I'm not asleep.

At least allow yourself to knock off early today. Don't let Bill Lumberg know.

Remember how we discussed how all the bees seemed to have disappeared?

HA! I saw that. So clearly, on some global level the defenses are mobilizing.

The June issue of SMITHSONIAN magazine has an article about the colony collapse phenomenon, but I haven't had a chance to read it yet.

And I saw two HUGE yellow-jackets while I was gardening on Saturday...
